Thousands of people dressed in colourful costumes celebrated the start of the street carnival in one of Germany's strongholds, counting down to the official beginning at 11:11 am. The crowd traditionally gathered in Cologne's Alter Markt square where revellers began enjoying a glass of "Koelsch" beer well before festivities officially kicked off.
